Before he leaves, Nate asks him about the card game he’d mentioned earlier. Carter overhears them and tells Chuck, “Maybe if your daddy bought you a basketball team instead of a hotel, you’d have some skill.” They start sniping at each other until Nate gets in the middle. Nate defends him, saying that Carter is good at basketball. He asks Nate what Carter is still doing with them and accuses Carter of being a freeloader. Carter tags along, much to Chuck’s displeasure. The next day, Chuck, Nate, and a few of their other friends go out to play basketball. Carter tells Nate about a high-stakes card game group he plays with, and tells him he should come sometime. Chuck tells him to stop talking, and start partying. How could that be better than living the high life in the penthouses of Manhattan’s elite? Nate is more open to it, though, saying, “Who cares about a party when you can travel the world?” Carter vehemently agrees, and adds that who you are as a person is more important than what you own. They sit and talk, as Carter tells them how he had decided to go rogue - his parents had cut him off as a result, but he tells them, “Once you turn away from money, you see it doesn’t buy you freedom. Carter comes over to say hi to Nate, who unlike Chuck, is happy to see Carter and gives him a hug. Chuck scoffs at Carter’s scruffy appearance and calls him a loser.
